5 Tips to Save Your Smartphone’s Battery Life

It seems that smartphones have really taken over the market in the last couple of years. Due to advancing technology, smartphones are getting more powerful and pack new features with every release. We’re bound to see a lot of new smartphones in 2012, as companies are striving to pack a lot of power in a small package.

Many smartphones on the market right now are even more powerful than desktop PCs were ten years ago. I remember my first desktop was a PIII running at 667Mhz plus 256MB of RAM and now I own a smartphone that’s three times better than that first desktop PC. Smartphones like the Xperia Arc HD from Somy Ericsson are really powerful, thus they consume just as much energy.

It’s really amazing how quickly things advance in the tech world, however there are still a couple of issues manufacturers should take care of right away. One of those pressing issues is our smartphones’ battery life. Due to the power they pack, most smartphones’ battery doesn’t last more than a day, if you use it like anyone else for making a couple of calls, browsing a few pages on the Internet and read your e-mail. That’s what moderate usage means for me and I suspect it means the same thing for most smartphone users.

The battery life problem is even more pressing for the iPhone users, especially because Apple decided not to include a removable battery with their products. What you can do in this case is save your battery when you’re not effectively using your smartphone, to ensure it doesn’t drain and leave you hanging when you need it the most.

Here are five tips you should remember next time you’re travelling, or you’re away from any power source for a long period of time.

Turn your Smartphone’s Brightness Down

This is one of the main reasons why your battery drains so fast. Turning down the brightness of the display will save you a lot of battery power, and this tip also applies to laptops and tablets as well.

Turn off WiFi, GPS, Bluetooth

These are three services that drain your battery very fast if left enabled for no particular reason. If you’re putting your smartphone away for a while, you should always make sure you turn off these services until you need them again. WiFi will always look for networks when you’re travelling and that can drain your battery power faster than you can say “wireless”. The GPS will try to connect to satellites and identify your position on the map, and is also one of the main reasons why your battery drains so fast.

Turn off Apps

Apps running in the background are another reason why your smartphone battery drains out. Make sure you install a task manager app and kill those apps before you put your smartphone in your pocket.

Turn Off Sync

Sync is used to refresh fetching intervals, particularly for your e-mail app. Sync is also used to refresh news from RSS feeds or Facebook notifications, so you should make sure you set a proper interval for the sync to run, in order to prevent your battery from draining of energy.

Resort to a Battery Saving App

If you keep forgetting to take these steps before you stop using your smartphone, you should definitely install a battery saving app. This kind of apps do all the steps above for you and even have different modes, depending on how much you need to save energy for a later time.

It’s probably best to remember these tips as they are pretty basic tips to take, in order to save some energy. If you have your own tricks that help you save your smartphone’s battery, you can share them by using the comment section.
